The Nigerian government has granted asylum to one of Guinea-Bissau's opposition leaders, Fernando Dias da Costa. This was reported by Reuters in connection with the Nigerian Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The politician announced his candidacy for the presidential election in Guinea-Bissau on November 23. On November 26, in Guinea-Bissau, the army announced the overthrow of President Oumaro Sissoku Embalo, closed the borders and imposed a curfew. The coup occurred against the backdrop of the presidential election, where two candidates declared victory at the same time. The rebels claimed they acted after discovering a “destabilization plan” involving “politicians, drug lords and foreigners”. On November 30, the military in power in Guinea-Bissau announced the composition of a 28-person transitional government. Most government members are close to ousted President Oumar Sisoku Embalo.
